Our documentation team, Anna Lou has completed the first draft of the family directory and classes information. She will present the draft at the public area for families to verify the information to be published in the Directory. This Saturday will be your last chance to verify your information.

With the support of our parent representatives, we are pleased to announce that we will be hosting the harvest festival event on Sat (Nov 02, 2024); therefore, we would like to seek families’ support to sign up for the “goodies” donation and/or event helper.  Like previous  year’s event, we will continue having a school wide parade and group photo session.  We will set up a Halloween theme booth for students’ & teachers’ photos taken by class.  Students are encouraged to wear their favorite Halloween costumes to school that day and enjoy the parade!

搖鈴後演習開始，到達室外集合地點後，請老師清點各班學生人數無誤，並於收到通知安全信號後，各班帶回教室走廊下課休息，於2:40 PM前進入教室上第二節課。

We will be conducting our annual school fire drill tomorrow around 2:20 p.m.  Our teachers have received guidance from the Director of Discipline earlier this week, and we expect the students to follow their respective teacher’s instructions during the evacuation exercise to move together safely as a group to the designated assembly areas outside of the Ward Church building.  The detailed evacuation plan, route, and assembly area map can be found here.

活動辦法:

請家長將貴子弟閱讀的中文書名及閱讀時間紀錄在表格內, 並將表格於活動結束當日(11/2/2024) 繳交各班老師。凡學校或私人家中的中文書籍, 報章, 雜誌, 電視, 或電影都歡迎採用。學校教師指定的課本、習作、閱讀小書及家庭作業不在閱讀範圍之內。凡閱讀滿 240 分鐘的學生, 凡閱讀滿 240 分鐘的學生, 均予以$10為獎勵。中文電視電影觀看不可超過 120 分鐘。

We are about to kick off an approximately month-long event meant to encourage our students to immerse themselves with Chinese book reading and/or video watching in addition to their Chinese learning in class.  Parents are encouraged to join your student’s reading month activities to make it a family fun event!  Detailed participating instructions (including reward format at the end of the program) will be communicated by your respective class teacher tomorrow. 

Instructions: Please record the titles of reading materials and reading time in the reading log. Return this form to your classroom teacher on 11/2/2024. The following activities will be counted as reading time: reading Chinese books or magazines, and watching Chinese programming (TV, DVD). Time spent on assigned homework or textbook should not be counted toward reading time. Students will be rewarded with $10  for completing at least 240 minutes of reading during the reading month. Note that watching Chinese programming (TV or DVD) could only count up to 120 minutes.

Free Chinese Reading Book Exchange (outside of the classroom area)

為加強學生的中文閱讀能力，中文書籍借閱重新開放，我們會將書籍擺放在教室區域外的公共空間，學生可以依自己的喜好及閱讀能力借閱中文書籍，也歡迎您將家中的中文書籍帶來跟大家交換

        借閱規則:

• 每個學生每次借閱以一本為限
• 借閱時間為一週(以上課週數計算)，下個上課日上課前歸還至書籍借閱區域
• 圖書管理員不會登記每本書籍的借閱者，請大家自我遵守借閱規則
• 如果您的家中還有疫情前跟學校借閱的中文書籍，請帶回學校交換新的書籍

Program guideline:

• Honor system based so no reservation needed or rental record tracking
• Exchange/Borrowing is limited to one book per student for one class week (i.e., pick up on Saturday class and return on the next Saturday class)
• Donation of Chinese reading books are greatly appreciated

讀書月即將展開，中文學習除了課堂上的授課，學校鼓勵學生們在課外的時間多多閱讀觀看中文讀物及影片，請各位家長陪同並協助小朋友們閱讀中文圖書和影片，詳細的說明及表格將由各班老師提供及解釋。

We are about to kick off an approximately month-long event meant to encourage our students to immerse themselves with Chinese book reading and/or video watching in addition to their Chinese learning in class.  Parents are encouraged to join your student’s reading month activities to make it a family fun event!  Detailed participating instructions (including reward format at the end of the program) will be communicated by your respective class teacher tomorrow.

9/17是一年一度的中秋節。過去學校都有發小月餅給學生們，不過由於疫情而取消了。這學年學校將延續以往的習俗，將在這周六提供月餅給已注冊的學生以及家長教師們享用。祝大家中秋節快樂！

Dear MCS Families and teachers,

It’s great to see many familiar faces and meet some new families visiting MCS in person during our first day of the new school year last Saturday!   It’s a great team effort to make our first safe return to school day a success and thank you so much to all the MCS Staff members and families involved.  

We are still accepting new students. Do encourage your friends or families who are interested in learning  Chinese to try out our Traditional Chinese and CFL classes.

We will celebrate the mid-autumn festival (9/17/2024) this Saturday by passing out moon cakes to registered students, as well as parents and teachers. Hope you enjoy the moon cakes.

The MCS Volunteer group meeting will be hosted at the Information Desk area, which is next to the Ward Church cafe. We shall meet from 1:45pm – 2:15pm.

「全球華文網」第三場線上教學來了!!

 本次線上教學分享活動特別邀請英國僑校「Mandarin Go（快樂學華語中文學校）」創辦人林昱廷老師，主講「海外幼兒華語趣味教學活動與實例分享」主題，將結合自身豐富經驗，與華語文教師交流幼兒華語教學活動規劃及課程設計，共創能引起學生學習興趣的歡樂課堂，期對海外教師能有所助益。

 密西根舞獅隊應邀參加過密西根州長Whitmer主持的農曆新年慶典、底特律美術館、密西根大學、密西根州立大學等多元文化節慶的邀請表演；到Novi, Ann Arbor圖書館為孩子做舞獅教育文化宣導。

 我們號召更多愛好健身、團體合作的新學員加入，發揮台灣友善助人的軟實力，共同宣揚舞獅文化，將舞獅表演帶來的歡樂、平安喜慶，推廣到美國主流社會，促進文化及族群交流，互相理解，和諧相處。

Michigan Youth Lion Dance Team Recruitment

Please join us if you are 12+ years old!  

1. Teenagers aged 12 and above who are currently or have previously attended Michigan traditional Chinese character schools for at least 2 years.
2. Teenagers aged 12 and above whose parents or grandparents are Taiwanese expatriates.
3. Teenagers aged 12 and above who have attended schools that teach traditional Chinese characters for at least 2 years.
4. In addition to the above conditions, basic Mandarin listening and speaking skills are also required.

We have so much to offer!   Cultural Heritage, Strong Team Bonding, Volunteer Hours for applying for Presidential Volunteer Service award… and so much more!

不经一番彻骨寒 怎得梅花扑鼻香

這是2023-24學年最後一份周報了。以下有幾點要向大家報告的。

恭喜畢業生賴恩齊，翁美津，孫憲威以及結業生朱啟明完成他們的中文學習旅程。

秦淑芬老師，曾雅竹老師以及游文月老師已經決定下學年不再為本校執教。以下為老師們在本校的執教年份。

感謝你們在這些年為孩子們的付出，你們的離去將是孩子們的損失。

目前收到通知，秦淑芬老師決定退休，沒有機會在畢業典禮感謝這些年的辛勞，著實可惜。學校在這裏祝福秦老師退休快樂，開心迎接下一段旅程！

目前有55位學生報讀2024-25學年的課程了。其中三年級與四年級的學生人數各不足四人，下學年有可能會以拼班形式來開班。我將在七月初聯絡三年級及四年級的家長和老師們商討有關拼班事宜。

This is the last newsletter of the 2023-24 School Year. 

Congratulations to Branden Lai, Carrie Ong, Riley Soon and Victor Zhu for completing their Mandarin language learning journey at Michigan Chinese School.

Our teachers, Tephy Qin, Donna Tseng and Melanie Yu have decided not to continue their teaching at Michigan Chinese School in the 2024-25 school year. We sincerely thank you for your dedication and effort in teaching our children, children will miss you very much. The following are their years of teaching at MCS.

I also received confirmation that Teacher Tephy Qin has decided to retire from teaching. With regret, we didn’t get the chance to thank you during the Graduation Ceremony. We wish you a happy retirement.

We have 55 students enrolled for the 2024-25 school year. However the number of students enrolled for 3rd grade and 4th grade do not meet the minimum requirement of 4 students per class, hence there is a possibility to merge 3rd and 4th grade classes in 2024-25. I will contact the parents and teachers of 3rd grade and 4th grade in early July to discuss this matter.

The following is the 2024-25 MCS Open Enrollment ad. Please help to promote the school to recruit more students who are interested in learning Mandarin.

6月1日，家長會長，黃雅玲已經正式提呈畢業條款更改連署書。以下為董事長，陳彥良宣佈董事會於6月8日的投票結果。

Dear MCS Parents and Teachers, 

On June 1, The Parent Council Chairperson, Yaling Huang has officially submitted the petition of changing the graduation requirement to the MCS Board. The Board Chairperson, Yen-Liang Chen announced the decision of the MCS Board members on June 8.

Below is the summary of the voting result based on what I’ve gathered, but please advise if I missed anything; otherwise, I hereby announce that the petition review has been concluded and did not pass. 

– For/Yes: 1

– No/Against: 4

– Abstain: 1

Feedback from the board members:

These changes will raise questions in the future, like why condition 2 doesn’t require proof from transfer students, but condition 3 requires proof. I disagree with this change.

If the student left the school, it doesn’t make sense to allow the student to return to the school to request a graduation certificate if they managed to complete Chinese AP with a score 4 or above within 5 years of leaving the school. It’s like the student left Eastern Michigan University in the second year, completed the degree at UOM, and then returned to EMU asking for a certificate. How would this make any sense? So I disagree with this change.

• The proposal contemplates a condition through which the MCS students, either currently studying at MCS or being a former MCS student who left the school within five years from the last day of class attendance, who achieve level 4 score in the Chinese AP exam can be eligible for the graduation certificate.  However, per the current verbiage of the Section III.i.8 (snip below) within the MCS Policy & Procedure Manual, the graduation certificate is meant to reward students for their perseverance of studying Chinese language while cultivating their cultural experiences and appreciation on a gradual, immersive basis, rather than to certify the students’ Chinese capabilities; therefore, unless the verbiage within the Section III.i.8 (Graduation Requirements) is revised to contemplate such “capability” based requirement, the proposal would lead to an inconsistency as to what the graduation certificate truly encompasses
• Assuming such “capability” based requirement were to be incorporated into the Graduation Requirements section of the MCS Policy & Procedure Manual, additional questions (below) may arise which would give me a pulse:
  • Why not use AP level 5 score (vs. level 4) as the criterion if the intention is to certify students’ Chinese capabilities?
  • The proposal would allow a situation in which the students can be eligible for the graduation certificate if they achieve AP level 4 score, but only study at MCS for one year (or even less).  In this case, how do we justify/reconcile the purpose of the MCS graduation certificate when the students can be rewarded either through the “tenure” (i.e., perseverance) track or the “capability” track (e.g., AP level 4 with a “short” study at MCS)?
  • Everything being equal otherwise, what’s the point of issuing the graduation certificate to those students who have left MCS for less than five years and score level 4 in Chinese AP test but weren’t qualified for the graduation certificate by the time they left MCS?  Also, why is five years being the cutoff threshold?  Why not use one, two, or three years, if and only if this “claw back” type of criteria can be justified?
