Chinese as Second Language Class

Chinese as Second Language (CSL) Class
This course is specially designed to teach students who are interested
in learning Chinese yet do not have a Chinese-speaking environment at
home.
The course teaches everyday practical Chinese; from greetings, weather,
climate, going out to eat, planning a trip, shopping in the
supermarket, and much, much more.

Teacher: Dr. Rose Yin Geist
Why you are going to love my class
- I teach you how to express your feelings, desires and
experience in Chinese. You are the center of the class. I
design the lesions based on your interests and your everyday life.
- I embed Chinese culture in our lessons whenever there
is parallelism to the subject, e.g., Moon festival in the season
subject, Fung-Sui in the weather subject, Chinese surnames in the
history and geographic subject, etc.
- We watch movies, sing songs, read comedies, or put on
a play. You will learn Chinese while being entertained.
- Regardless of your entrance level, I will enrich your
Chinese language knowledge and skill.
My favorite part about teaching you
I thoroughly enjoy working with you. Since we have a small class, I can
work with you individually or design a lesson that includes everyone’s
interests. This is a highly interactive class with everyone
participating in multiple formats. I will help you speak
elegantly, not “Engnese” Every class will be fun!

Teaching has been my profession for the last 35 years and I have taught
at Michigan Chinese School for 10 years. Learning Chinese is like
learning everything else. Logic is the key; instead of
memorizing it, try to make sense of it. There are over 40,000 Chinese
characters which can be classified in six categories. Each
category contains characters from simple to complex; they are easy to
learn once the logic and system are shown. For example, any
character with “氵”means some form of water
or is related to water; “河” is river, “渴” means thirsty. In spoken
Chinese, there are between 5,000 to over 20,000 idioms in Chinese,
depending on the stringency of the definition. Each idiom has its
unique historical and cultural background; it can not be literally
translated. Chinese make a habit of using them in their daily
conversation to make their speaking more effective. Learning how to use
idioms will make you not only speak well but be culturally
sophisticated. Here are some examples:
桃李满天下 peaches and plums all over under the sky (táo lǐ mǎn tiān shià)
meaning a teacher has students all over the world.
七上八下 7 up and 8 down (chī shàng bā shià) meaning nervous.
一毛不拔 one hair can’t be pulled (yī máo bù bá) meaning someone
is very stingy.
九泉之下 nine springs below (jiǔ quán zhī shià ) meaning in the
happy hunting ground.
九牛一毛 nine oxen and one hair (jiǔ niú yī máo) meaning minimal
amount of cost for a wealthy person.
Learning Chinese is certainly a mental exercise; it is so exciting.
